Contestant Guidelines

It is our desire to make this day as fun, friendly and hassle-free as possible. In order to do that, we ask that you observe the following guidelines:

The Youth Category is open to contestants age 16 and under.

Individuals may compete in only one band, but may enter up to three (3) individual and/or duet categories in addition to dance

No taps are allowed.

For the dance contest, all adult contestants dance together. All youth contestants dance together.

Please avoid performing recently copyrighted music.

Judges will be scoring contestants on the following 3 criteria: Technical Proficiency (timing, tone, intonation, etc.), Character & Expression, and Degree of Difficulty (more challenging pieces will receive a higher score).

Old Time Band competition is not restricted to dance tunes. Bands are encouraged to take risks and showcase their skills & versatility, including vocal capabilities. Bands should prepare at least 2 selections.

One accompanying musician is permitted in individual categories.

An Old Time Band should consist of no fewer than 3 and no more than 6 members.

Flatpickers entering the adult guitar contest category should play traditional or old time style tunes and melodies, avoiding hot bluegrass, swing or jazz styles.

Contestants will introduce their song/tune to the audience, and short informational and/or anecdotal comments are encouraged. SPEAK CLEARLY INTO THE MICROPHONE!

The “Miscellaneous” category includes mouthharp, autoharp, dulcimer, mandolin, and other assorted instruments.
